She was stabilised at the scene but died in hospital shortly afterwards.

Police are hunting her ex-boyfriend, who had allegedly been lying in wait for her and it is claimed was spotted running from the murder scene across nearby countryside.

Ms Wilson victim reportedly took out a restraining order against the 55-year-old Spaniard last July after he beat her up.

Detectives had been making regular visits to the Brit expat but insisted she had not voiced any concerns.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil in Madrid said: 'The victim died in hospital after being stabbed outside her home.

'The man we are hunting is her ex-boyfriend, a 55-year-old Spaniard who we think had been lying in wait for her and was seen running from the murder scene.

'We believe he may be hiding out in countryside near the scene of the crime.

'A helicopter is searching for him from the air and several police units are looking for him on the ground.

Thirteen women had been killed in cases of domestic violence in Spain this year before today's killing.

The authorities thought the British woman was at 'low risk' of being killed by her ex, newspaper El Pais said.

She reported him to the authorities under Spain's Law Against Violence of Gender.
Of the 14 victims so far this year, 11 were Spanish and three were foreigners.

Four of the murders took place in the southern region of Andalusia, two in the north east region of Catalonia and two in the region of Madrid, which includes the capital city.

The previous murder in the Madrid region took place on January 19 when a man strangled his Ecuadorian girlfriend in the town of Fuenlabrada, south west of the capital.

Last year 73 women died at the hands of their partners in Spain, an increase on the previous year's total of 55 women.

In October last year Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba admitted the government was 'not doing well' in combating the problem, which he described as 'horrible'.

Spain updated its domestic violence laws in 2004, strengthening the powers of restraining orders and making aggressive behaviour against a partner a criminal offence.

Since then the courts have passed more than 145,000 sentences against men convicted of being aggressive to their partners.

Judges have also given out 141,000 restraining orders.

Fuente el Saz del Jarama is a village of just 6,000 inhabitants 25 miles north west of Madrid.
The house where the victim lived is on the outskirts of the village on a main road running through it.

She is thought to have been leaving the property to go to work when she was attacked
